About this tool

Is a song too high or too low for your voice? Paste the lyrics with chords and shift them by any number of semitones. Chord lines above the lyrics are rewritten so that every chord stays above the same syllable; chords in square brackets like [Am] (ChordPro format) are recognised as well. Lyric lines stay untouched.

The spelling of the new chords adapts to the new key automatically (e.g. Bb rather than A# in F major), or you can force sharps or flats. The capo table shows which shapes to play at which fret and marks the position with the most easy open chords. With German notation, H, B, Fis and Es work too. To see the notes of a single chord, use the Chord Finder.

How it works

  1. Paste the song with chords – chords on their own line above the lyrics, or in square brackets.
  2. Use plus and minus to set how many semitones the song should go up or down; the old and new key are shown next to it.
  3. Copy the transposed text and, if you like, pick a capo position with easy shapes from the table.

Frequently asked questions

How does the tool recognise chords?

A line counts as a chord line if it consists only of chords and bar symbols such as |, %, x2 or N.C. A line like “A man walks into a bar” contains normal words and is left unchanged. Chords in square brackets are recognised anywhere in the text; section names such as [Verse] or [Chorus] are kept.

How many semitones do I need?

Every semitone is one fret on the guitar or one key on the piano. From C to D is +2, from G to E is −3. Next to the control you see the key before and after transposing; the first chord of the song counts as the key.

How does a capo work?

A capo shortens all strings and raises the sound by one semitone per fret. If a song is in Bb, you can play the G major shapes (G, D, Em, C) with a capo on the 3rd fret – it still sounds in Bb. The table shows the shapes for each fret and how many of them are easy open chords.

Why does it say Bb rather than A#?

A# and Bb sound the same but are written differently depending on the key. In “Auto”, the tool uses flats for F, Bb, Eb, Ab and Db major and their relative minors (and for Eb minor), sharps otherwise. With ♯ or ♭ you force one spelling for all chords.

Is my chord spelling kept?

Yes, only the root and bass note are replaced. Two semitones up, C-7 becomes D-7 and Cmaj7/E becomes Dmaj7/F#. In German notation the new roots are written with German names, e.g. Fism rather than F#m.
