About this tool

The GPS speedometer shows your current speed using your smartphone’s GPS – while cycling, running, driving, on a train or on a boat. Pick km/h, mph, knots or m/s; you also see the maximum and average speed, the distance covered and the time since you started.

Below are your coordinates in decimal degrees and in degrees, minutes, seconds to copy, the altitude above sea level and your course. Everything runs in the browser; your location is not sent to no.tools. The direction while standing still is shown by the Compass, trip costs are calculated by the Fuel Cost Calculator.

How it works

  1. Open the page on your smartphone, tap “Start GPS” and allow location access.
  2. Wait outdoors until the GPS accuracy is below about 10 m, and keep the screen on.
  3. Read speed, distance and coordinates. “Reset” starts a new measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the GPS speedometer?

With good reception outdoors, the speed is usually accurate to 1–2 km/h – often more accurate than a car speedometer, which by design shows slightly too much. In buildings, tunnels, between tall buildings or in trains with metallized windows the signal can become inaccurate or drop out.

Why does it sometimes show a speed while I’m standing still?

GPS positions jitter by a few meters. The tool ignores speeds below 0.5 m/s (1.8 km/h) and only counts distance once you have moved clearly further than the reported accuracy. With poor reception, a value can still appear briefly.

Does it keep measuring in the background?

No. Browsers pause location access when the tab is in the background or the screen turns off. That’s why the tool keeps the screen awake while it runs. For long recordings with a locked screen, a dedicated tracking app is the better choice.

Is my location stored or sent anywhere?

The tool itself does not send your location anywhere and does not store it. Your browser or operating system determines the location; depending on the device it uses Wi-Fi and cellular data from the system provider in addition to GPS.

How accurate is the altitude?

GPS altitude is much less accurate than the position, typically ±10 to 20 m; the uncertainty is shown next to it. Some browsers provide no altitude at all, then it shows “unknown”.
