About this tool
Timesheets, flexitime or freelancer invoices: calculating working hours is error-prone because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. 7:45 + 8:30 equals 16:15 – not 15.75. This calculator does it for you.
It has three parts: it calculates the working time from start, end and break – including night shifts across midnight. It adds up any number of times, also negative ones such as absences. And it converts between hours:minutes and decimal hours as used for billing: 7:45 hours are 7.75 hours.
Everything runs in your browser. For periods between calendar dates, use the Date Calculator.
How it works
- Enter start, end and break – the working time appears instantly, also as a decimal number.
- To add up, write one time per line in “Add up times”, e.g. the days of a week.
- Negative values like -0:15 subtract time.
- In “Convert”, turn 7:45 into 7.75 hours or vice versa.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60: 45 minutes are 0.75 hours, so 7:45 is 7.75. Conversely, 0.2 hours × 60 = 12 minutes.
What about shifts across midnight?
If the end is before the start, the calculator automatically counts across midnight: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours (before deducting the break).
How much break is required?
In Germany, the Working Hours Act requires at least 30 minutes of break for more than 6 hours of work and at least 45 minutes for more than 9 hours. Other countries and collective agreements may have different rules.
Which input formats are recognized when adding?
Hours:minutes (7:45), with seconds (1:30:00), decimal hours with comma or dot (7,5 or 7.5h) and minutes (90min). A leading minus subtracts the time.
How do I calculate my earnings from the hours?
Multiply the decimal hours by your hourly rate, e.g. 7.75 h × 40 = 310. The Rule of Three Calculator calculator helps with further calculations.
