About this tool
In Germany, every federal state sets its own public holidays. Nine holidays apply nationwide; depending on the state, Epiphany, Corpus Christi, Reformation Day, All Saints’ Day, the Day of Repentance and Prayer, International Women’s Day or World Children’s Day are added. Easter and all holidays that depend on it move every year, so it pays to check the calendar before you request time off.
The tool lists all public holidays for any year from 1995 to 2200, optionally for one federal state. It suggests bridge days that turn a few vacation days into a long weekend or a whole week off, and it counts the working days per month. Everything is calculated in your browser.
How it works
- Choose the year and your federal state. Without a state you see every holiday together with the states where it applies.
- Holidays on a weekend are greyed out in the list because they do not give you an extra day off.
- Under “Bridge days”, choose how many vacation days you want to spend per bridge and see how many consecutive days off you get.
- The “Working days” table shows Monday to Friday, the holidays on weekdays and the remaining working days per month and for the year.
Frequently asked questions
Which public holidays apply in all of Germany?
New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (1 May), Ascension Day, Whit Monday, German Unity Day (3 October) and Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In 2017, Reformation Day was also a one-off nationwide holiday.
What does “Include regional holidays” mean?
Some holidays apply only in part of a state: Assumption Day in Bavaria in municipalities with a predominantly Catholic population, and Corpus Christi in some municipalities in Saxony and Thuringia. By default they do not count as a day off. Turn the option on if they apply where you work.
How are bridge days calculated?
A bridge day is a working day between a holiday and the weekend or another holiday. The tool looks for every gap of at most the number of working days you choose that is next to a holiday on a weekday, and shows how many consecutive days off you get by taking it.
Are Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve holidays?
No, 24 and 31 December are not public holidays in Germany. Many employers give the whole or half day off, but that is a company rule. The tool counts them as normal working days.
How is the date of Easter determined?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring (after 21 March) and falls between 22 March and 25 April. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day (39 days later), Whitsun (49 and 50 days) and Corpus Christi (60 days) depend on it.
Can I count working days between two dates including holidays?
Yes, in the Date Calculator you can choose a federal state. It then subtracts its holidays from the working days and skips them when adding working days. For your working hours, use the Work Time Calculator.
