About this tool
The German vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer) for cars first registered since July 2009 has two parts: a base amount by displacement (€2 per started 100 cm³ for petrol, €9.50 for diesel) and a CO₂ component for every gram above the threshold. For cars first registered since 2021 the rate per gram rises in steps from €2.00 to €4.00.
Battery electric cars first registered between 18 May 2011 and the end of 2030 are exempt for up to ten years, at most until 31 December 2035. After that the tax depends on the permissible total weight and is reduced by half. The calculator shows when the exemption ends and the tax afterwards.
How it works
- Choose the drive: petrol, diesel or electric.
- Enter the date of first registration, plus displacement and CO₂ for combustion cars or the permissible total weight for electric cars.
- Read the annual tax and its components. For electric cars you see how long they stay exempt.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find displacement and CO₂?
In the registration certificate part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I): field P.1 is the displacement in cm³, V.7 the CO₂ emissions in g/km and F.2 the permissible total weight.
What is the CO₂ threshold?
It depends on the first registration: 120 g/km until the end of 2011, 110 g/km in 2012 and 2013, 95 g/km from 2014. Until the end of 2020 every gram above costs €2; from 2021 the progressive rates of €2.00 to €4.00 per gram apply.
How are hybrids taxed?
Hybrids and plug-in hybrids count as combustion cars: they pay the displacement base of their engine and the CO₂ component. Thanks to their low CO₂ value, plug-in hybrids often pay no CO₂ part. What each trip costs in fuel or electricity is answered by the Fuel Cost Calculator.
Why are older cars not supported?
Cars first registered before July 2009 are taxed by emission class and displacement, with many special cases. For those, use the vehicle tax calculator of German customs (Zoll).
