About this tool
Every PDF carries document properties: title, author, subject, keywords, the program it was created with, and the creation and modification dates. Often there is more in them than you want to share – such as the name from your user account, an old working title or the name of the template. This tool shows all entries and lets you change or remove them.
Besides the well-known fields, the tool shows further entries some programs write, and the XMP metadata: an embedded XML packet many programs add, often repeating the same details. “Remove all metadata” clears all of it at once. By the way: many PDF apps and browsers show the title field instead of the file name as the window title.
Reading and saving happen locally in your browser with pdf-lib; nothing is uploaded. The counterpart for photos is the EXIF Viewer & Editor.
How it works
- Drop the PDF onto the drop zone or click to choose it.
- Change the fields, clear them or click “Remove all metadata”. Further entries can be deleted or added one by one.
- Keep “Remove XMP metadata” ticked when you change details – otherwise some programs keep showing the old values.
- Click “Save PDF” – the PDF with the new metadata is downloaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The tool reads and writes the file entirely in your browser. The document never leaves your device.
What is XMP metadata and why remove it?
XMP is an XML block in the PDF that Office and Adobe programs, for example, add. It often contains the same details as the fields (title, author, dates), sometimes more, such as an editing history. Many PDF apps prefer the XMP values. If you only change the fields, they may keep showing the old details – that is why removing it is preselected.
Does “Remove all metadata” really remove everything?
It clears all fields of the Info section, the further entries and the document’s XMP metadata. The language stays because it helps screen readers. Personal details can also hide in the content, though: in comments, form fields, embedded images with EXIF data or XMP data of single images. The tool does not change those.
Does anything change in the content of my PDF?
No. Pages, text, images, bookmarks and forms stay as they are. The file is rewritten when saving and may therefore end up slightly smaller or larger than before.
Why can my PDF not be opened?
The tool cannot edit encrypted or password-protected PDFs. Open the file with the password in your PDF app and save or print it as a new PDF.
