About this tool
A thesis, an application, an offer or a merged document without page numbers: this tool puts a number on every page – plainly as “3”, as “Page 3 of 12” or in your own format with the placeholders {n} and {total}. You set the position, font, size, colour and distance from the edge.
With the page selection you can skip the cover page (“2-”), and “First number” sets where counting starts. For double-sided printing the number moves to the left on even pages, so it is always on the outer edge. Rotated pages (such as sideways scans) get the number where you see it.
Everything happens locally in your browser with pdf-lib; the preview is rendered with pdf.js. The PDF is not uploaded. To combine several PDFs first, use Merge PDF; to add a stamp such as “Draft”, use Add Watermark to PDF.
How it works
- Drop the PDF onto the drop zone or click to choose it.
- Pick a format (e.g. “Page {n} of {total}”) or write your own, and click the position in the grid.
- If needed, choose which pages get a number and which number to start with, and adjust font, size, colour and margin. The preview shows each page with the result.
- Click “Save PDF” – the numbered PDF is downloaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Preview and editing run entirely in your browser. The document never leaves your device.
How do I leave the cover page without a number?
Enter for example “2-” under “Pages”. If the second page should still show 2, set “First number” to 2. {total} is always the last number given.
Which characters can I use?
The tool uses the PDF standard fonts Helvetica, Times and Courier. They contain Latin letters with umlauts and accents, digits, €, quotation marks and dashes, but no Cyrillic letters or emoji, for example. If the format contains such characters, you get a notice.
What does “Double-sided” do?
When printing on both sides, even pages are on the left. With the option on and the number at the bottom right, pages 2, 4, 6 … get it at the bottom left – always on the outer edge. It goes by the page number in the document.
Will the number cover content of my document?
The number is placed on top of the existing content. If there is text in that spot, increase the margin or choose another position – the preview shows you before you save.
